This two-day workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practical application of the Picture Exchange Communication System® (PECS®), an evidence-based approach for teaching functional communication to individuals with limited or no speech.

PECS begins by teaching learners to initiate communication through spontaneous requests and progresses to skills such as responding to questions and commenting. A key advantage—particularly for young children with autism and related developmental disabilities—is the potential to develop independent speech through consistent use.

Participants receive in-depth instruction on implementing all six PECS phases, including using attributes to expand communication. The highly interactive format features demonstrations, video examples, and hands-on role-play to build confidence and competence.

Attendees are introduced to the PECS Training Manual, which offers guidance on assessing motivators, effective teaching strategies, prompt removal, and creating communication-rich environments. The workshop also presents the Pyramid Approach to Education, a comprehensive framework supporting long-term communication development across diverse settings.
