Course Description
This engaging and practical two-day workshop is designed to empower educators with the knowledge and strategies needed to support English Language Learners (ELLs) and SEN students in accessing curriculum content at their cognitive level, regardless of language proficiency or individual needs Participants will explore the realities ELLs and SEN students face and walk away with evidence-based tools for fostering inclusion and deeper understanding in multilingual classrooms.
Learning Outcome
- Experience the challenges of language learning first-hand through a short practical immersion lesson delivered in Dutch.
- Explore real-world case studies showcasing both effective and ineffective ELL teaching practices.
- Analyze the Cognitive Gap Theory and its implications for student learning (develop an understanding why students often comprehend more than they can express and how this affects classroom engagement and assessment.
- Develop a toolkit of practical, transferable strategies for immediate classroom use.
- Explore and apply effective, inclusive strategies to support ELLs, including translanguaging and the strategic use of home languages.
- Identify the needs of SEN students and have an awareness of trigger points.
